Golborne (go: [l] bə: n) is a city in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan , in Greater Manchester , England. The city historically belongs to the county of Lancashire.

Golborne is 9 km south-southeast of Wigan , 10 km northeast of Warrington and 22 km west of Manchester .

Surname

The name Golborne comes from the Old English words golde and burna and means "creek where marsh marigolds grow". In early documents Golborne was spelled differently: 1187 Goldeburn, 1201 Goldburc, 1212 Goseburn and Goldburn, or 1242 Golburne. Golborne and Gowborne were the 16th century spellings.
