The Carnegie Library is a former library building in the small town of Terrell, Texas . It was built in the years 1903/04 according to plans by the Waco- based architectural firm Messer & Weymess-Smith in the Classical Revival style . The construction company Goodman & Anderson was commissioned with the execution.

history

In 1903 the city of Terrell decided to build a public library. Three local women's associations made contact with the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie's Foundation , which sponsored the building of libraries to ensure free access to education across the United States. Provided that the city provides a piece of land, Carnegie pledged the construction costs and a fixed annual amount for its maintenance. Suitable building land was found on the property of the publisher Oscar Branch Colquitt , who later became governor of Texas. Construction began in 1903 and the inauguration took place in March 1904.

The building was used as a public library until 1985. Since then, it has served as the headquarters of the Terrell Heritage Society, which had operated the Terrell Heritage Society Museum on the second floor of the house since 1973.

As a significant part of the city of Terrell's architectural heritage, the Carnegie Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in May 2006 .
