Karl Brandau (born March 12, 1849 in Kassel ; † October 20, 1917 there ; full name: Karl Wilhelm Brandau ) was a German railway civil engineer .

Brandau first attended the higher trade school in Kassel, then he studied from 1866 to 1869 at the Zurich Polytechnic and specialized in the railway system. After various professional positions, he founded the engineering office Brandt & Brandau in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst in 1879 with Alfred Brandt , whom he had met while studying in Zurich .

The construction of a number of railway tunnels in Europe can be traced back to Brandau . The best known of these is the Simplon Tunnel , for the construction of which the engineering office Brandt & Brandau in a consortium with the Zurich-based construction company Locher was awarded the contract in 1893. The construction of the 20-kilometer tunnel took eight years and required 3000 workers.
