Ottokar Wüst

Ottokar Wüst (born December 22, 1925 in Bochum ; † June 18, 2011 , ibid) was a German football functionary . Wüst was President of VfL Bochum from 1966 to August 1993 .

Early years leading up to the presidency

As a teenager, Wüst played football for VfL. At the age of 37, the son of the former chairman of VfL's predecessor Germania and, after the merger to form VfL in 1938, Otto Wüst, who was head of the football department in 1962, took up a position on the board for the first time. VfL played its association games in the 2nd division West in 1962/63 and was not qualified for the second division of the West Regional Football League in 1963/64 at the start of the Bundesliga and entered the Westphalia Amateur League from the new division into classes. Together with Dr. Fritz Schleier, he managed the club's fortunes and signed Hubert Schieth, the promotion coach of the 1964/65 round in the Regionalliga West.

Presidency of VfL Bochum

In 1966 Ottokar Wüst was elected president. In the following 27 years of his presidency, first in 1968 with coach Hermann Eppenhoff, the then regional league club VfL Bochum entered a DFB Cup final , which the team made known for the first time in all of Germany. Three years later, Bochum was promoted - also with Eppenhoff - to the 1st Bundesliga in the summer of 1971. In the following years, Wüst was one of the most determined supporters of a new stadium in Bochum, which was finally realized in 1979 with the opening of the Ruhr Stadium .

Despite major financial bottlenecks and regular sales of top performers such as Franz-Josef Tenhagen , Heinz-Werner Eggeling , Hans Walitza and Christian Schreier , Wüst subsequently managed to keep VfL Bochum in the 1st Bundesliga. The coach Heinz Höher (1972–1979), Helmuth Johannsen (1979–1981), Rolf Schafstall (1981–1986), Hermann Gerland (1986–1988), Franz-Josef Tenhagen (1988/89) also contributed to this ), Reinhard Saftig (1989–1991), Holger Osieck (1991-October 1992) and Jürgen Gelsdorf (November 6, 1992 - November 6, 1994). Thanks to his eloquence, he was able to convince employees and players, he was able to inspire his club and his ideas. The obligations of the players Horst Christopeit , Heinz Höher, Werner Krämer , Hans Walitza, Michael Lameck and Stefan Kuntz were just as much evidence of his knowledge of the football business and his strategic thinking as the promotion and maintenance of the successful youth department of VfL, from which talents like Werner Balte , Frank Benatelli , Heinz-Werner Eggeling, Michael Eggert , Hermann Gerland, Frank Heinemann , Hans-Jürgen Köper , Martin Kree , Thorsten Legat , Peter Peschel and others have found their way into the league team. It wasn't until 1993, at the end of Ottokar Wüst's tenure as VfL President, that the first Bundesliga relegation occurred in VfL's history. This year Wüst handed over the official duties as VfL President to Werner Altegoer . Since then, Ottokar Wüst has been honorary president of VfL.

Private

Wüst, whose father was also chairman of a previous club of VfL, was the full-time owner of a men's clothing store in downtown Bochum. He died on June 18, 2011 after a serious illness at the age of 85 in the Augusta Hospital in Bochum.
