Erich Schiller (born October 23, 1943 ) is a former German soccer player and coach . From 1963 to 1970, the midfielder played a total of 164 league games and scored 23 goals in what was then the second -rate regional football league West for the Hamborn 07 and VfL Bochum clubs.

Career

The amateur footballer Erich Schiller, who came from VfB Rheingold Emmerich , began his career in 1963 at Hamborn 07 in the Regionalliga West . He made his debut on August 11, 1963 in the 2-0 home defeat against eventual runner-up Wuppertaler SV in the Regionalliga. Under coach Karl-Heinz Marotzke and alongside teammates such as goalkeepers Franz-Josef Sarna and Werner Scholz as well as field players Karl-Heinz Wirth , Heinz Pliska , Klaus Kunkel and Rainer Plich , the 20-year-old immediately completed 26 league games and scored for the "lions" four gates. For two rounds, the fight to stay in the league was in the foreground, before the athletic improvement succeeded from the 1965/66 season on reaching eighth place. In the fourth year of Schiller, 1966/67, Hamborn earned fifth place under coach Hermann Lindemann . With players like Werner Scholz, Ferdinand Heidkamp , Hans-Werner Hartl , Horst Heese , Heinz Versteeg and the twelve-time goalscorer Franz Wolny , the 27: 7 home points were the guarantee of success. Erich Schiller had scored four goals in 31 league games. After 115 games with 16 goals, he moved to VfL Bochum for the 1967/68 round .

For the Castroper Strasse team, he formed a midfield that was strong in playing and running with Gustav Eversberg and Hans-Jürgen Jansen . He made his debut under coach Hermann Eppenhoff on August 13, 1967 in a 3-0 home win against Westfalia Herne in the blue-whites' team. At the end of the round, VfL finished fifth and Schiller had scored four goals in 31 league games. His greatest sporting success, however, was his entry into the DFB Cup final in 1968 . In all five games of the cup round against Karlsruher SC (3: 2), VfB Stuttgart (2: 1), Borussia Mönchengladbach (2: 0), FC Bayern Munich (2: 1) and in the final against 1. FC Köln ( 1: 4) Schiller was in constant use in Bochum's midfield. In his second season in Bochum, 1968/69, he was severely affected by an injury.

In November 1968, Schiller was seriously injured in the championship game against TSV Marl-Hüls , after which he could no longer build on his previous performances. He was only able to play 13 games and due to the further injury-related loss of Gustav Eversberg, VfL could not take one of the first two places to move into the Bundesliga promotion round. In the two years of winning the title, 1970 and 1971, Schiller tried to return to competition, but more like four missions in 1969/70 and six in the 1970/71 season were no longer possible due to the consequences of injury. His last attempt was the substitution in the 46th minute on November 8, 1970 at the home game against Viktoria Köln; already in the 67th minute he had to be replaced by young player Hans-Jürgen Köper and his playing career at VfL Bochum was over.

For the 1971/72 round, Schiller ended his higher-class career and moved to TuS Witten-Stockum in the Westphalia regional league .

As coach of the B-Juniors at VfL Bochum , Schiller won the German B-Junior Championship on July 14, 1985, with players like Olaf Dreßel and Thorsten Legat .
