career

Sportfreunde Gladbeck and TSV Marl-Hüls, until 1966

From the youth of SC Buer-Hassel , the young player made his way to Sportfreunde Gladbeck in 1955 . With the Green-Whites from the Vestische Kampfbahn , he gained experience in the senior division in the 2nd Division West. From 1958 to 1961 he was promoted by the training work of the Schalke ex-national player Hermann Eppenhoff . Since the team with the four-leaf Velcro on the chest did not qualify for the newly installed second division of the West Regional Football League for the 1963/64 round , he accepted the offer from TSV Marl-Hüls and switched to the blue-and-white team at the Jahnstadion .

The regional league's debut season, 1963/64 , was very successful for the newcomer from Gladbeck and his new teammates from TSV Marl-Hüls. The team of coach Hennes Hoffmann around the players Heinz van Haaren , Karl-Heinz Sell , Christoph Walter and Rolf Pawellek got off to a start with 15: 3 points and surprisingly belonged to the top of the table. Pawellek made his debut immediately on the first match day, August 4, 1963, in the 0-0 home draw as a defender against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the team of Marl-Hüls. In the second half of the season he played in the three successful games [5: 1 points] against Wuppertaler SV (runner-up), Aachen (champions) and the champions of the round 1964/65, Borussia Mönchengladbach, on the center forward position. At the end of the lap, Marl-Hüls finished fourth behind Aachen, Wuppertal and Düsseldorf. In the second regional league year, 1964/65, Marl-Hüls could not repeat the performance and fell back to 15th place under the new coach Hans Hipp. For Pawellek and his teammates, the home game on August 30, 1964 in front of 11,000 spectators against the surprise champion Mönchengladbach - it ended with a goal by Werner Waddey in the 89th minute with 0: 1 - was one of the sporting highlights. As a middle runner he was the head of the defense and had to do with the BMG parade tower with Rudolf Pöggeler , Josef Heynckes , Bernd Rupp , Günter Netzer and Waddey. Even in the year of the football World Cup in England in 1966, Marl-Hüls only made 13th place. The three victories against Aachen (2-0), VfL Bochum (1-0) and Rot-Weiss Essen (2-1) stood out out. From 1963 to 1966 Pawellek played 96 competitive games in the Regionalliga West and scored 15 goals. He signed a new contract with Alemannia Aachen for the 1966/67 round and moved to the cathedral city.

Aachen, 1966 to 1972

He made his debut with the black and yellow immediately on the start of the round, in the 3-1 home win against Hamborn 07, as a left wing runner in the league team. Together with Jupp Martinelli and Josef Thelen he formed the runner row. At the end of the round, in 31 missions and one goal, he had helped Aachen win the championship in the Regionalliga West with one point ahead of Schwarz-Weiß Essen. In the promotion round he and his teammates under coach Michael Pfeiffer prevailed with two points ahead of main rival Kickers Offenbach and was able to celebrate promotion to the Bundesliga.

In the second year of the Bundesliga, 1968/69, Aachen achieved a great success by winning the runner-up. The season began on August 17, 1968 with an unexpected 4-1 win at the reigning German champions 1. FC Nürnberg. On matchday 16, November 30, 1968, Rolf Pawellek gave Aachen a 1-0 lead at 1. FC Köln in the 15th minute and Aachen won the game with 2-1 goals. When Hamburger SV was defeated with 2-0 goals on matchday 30, April 26, 1969, as runner-up in the table, he mainly had to do with Gert Dörfel on the left wing. But he still found the opportunity to participate in the offensive and prepared the 1-0 lead by Erwin Hermandung in the 66th minute . On the last game day, June 7, 1969, the black and yellow from Tivoli won the runner-up with a 1-0 away win at Hertha BSC. Pawellek defended on the right and met the wing talent Arno Steffenhagen . In 32 league games, the defender scored three goals for the runner-up - one point ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Braunschweig.

When the runner-up of the previous year suffered relegation to the Regionalliga West in the 1969/70 season, only Erwin Hermandung and Pawellek were two Alemanni in all 34 league games. The defensive player played a total of 93 league games in three rounds of the Bundesliga and scored five goals. From 1970 to 1972 Pawellek was in the second-rate regional league for Aachen in 57 competitive games and scored three goals. His last regional league game was dated May 14, 1972, when he lost with Alemannia with 0-2 goals at SVA Gütersloh.

Looking back, Pawellek records the South American tour in 1968 as a special event of his time in Aachen:

The South American tour in 1968, during which we played in Brazil in the famous Maracana Stadium against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro, in Uruguay against Nacional Montevideo and in Argentina against Boca Juniors Buenos Aires. A unique experience, not just in terms of sport. "

After 1972, the commercial employee continued his amateur football career at Eschweiler SG , Kohlschreiber BC and FV Haaren for several years.
