career

TSV Marl-Hüls, 1961 to 1965

At the sports club Buer-Hassel 1919 in North Gelsenkirchen, the career of the student Karl-Heinz Sell began in 1950 in the youth department. In the Green-Whites in the Katharinawäldchen, the offensive player went through all youth classes and also the first few years in senior football. For the round 1961/62 he signed a contract with the upper division TSV Marl-Hüls. Under coach Josef Gesell he made his debut with the blue-whites on August 6, 1961 in the home Jahn Stadium on the left wing in the opening game for the 1961/62 round against Fortuna Düsseldorf. In the 3: 3 home draw, he introduced himself excellently with two goals. At the side of teammates Günther Peters , Horst Wandolek and Heinz van Haaren , he completed 27 league games and scored eight goals. The "Blue Sparks" took 14th place. In the last year of the old West Football League, 1962/63, Marl-Hüls, under coach Rudi Gutendorf, finished the Oberliga chapter as bottom of the table and was classified in the West Regional Football League for the 1963/64 round.

With the new coach Hennes Hoffmann , the team from the northern Ruhr area made a tailor-made start. After nine point games, TSV showed 15: 3 points. Sell mostly formed the left wing with the half-left Lothar Ratajczak . The high points in the second half of the season were the two away games on April 5 and 12, 1964 for the top teams Wuppertaler SV and Alemannia Aachen. In front of 22,000 spectators in the stadium at the zoo , it was enough for a 0-0 draw against the runner-up and Sell and colleagues kidnapped by Tivoli with a 1-0 win both points at the champions. Sell had only suspended in one point game and had scored ten goals in 37 point games. Marl-Hüls took fourth place completely unexpectedly behind Aachen, Wuppertal and Düsseldorf. In the second regional league year, 1964/65, this placement could not be repeated under coach Hans Hipp and Sell accepted the offer from Alemannia Aachen for the round 1965/66.

Alemannia Aachen, 1965 to 1972

Oswald Pfau was Sell's first trainer at Alemannia until October 1965, after which he was replaced by Williberth Weth. "Heiner" Sell scored 13 goals in 31 games alongside teammates Christian Breuer , Alfred Glenski , Erwin Hoffmann , Heinz-Gerd Klostermann and Jupp Martinelli . Aachen took third place behind champions Fortuna Düsseldorf and vice RW Essen and had the best goal difference in the league with 97:40 goals. The decisive game for second place was lost by the black and yellow on May 15, 1966 with 1: 3 goals in the stadium on Hafenstrasse against RWE. With the new coach Hennes Hoffmann and left winger Sell, Aachen started the 1966/67 regional league season on August 21, 1966 with a 3-1 home win against Hamborn 07. In January 1967 the ex-Alemanne Michael Pfeiffer took over the trainer office at Tivoli. With one point ahead of SW Essen and three points each before Bielefeld and Bochum, Aachen achieved the second championship success in the Regionalliga West after 1964 and thus made it back into the promotion round. Sell had scored five goals in 27 games.

In the starting game in the promotion round on May 20, 1967, at Tivoli against Kickers Offenbach, Sell scored the 2-1 winner against the team from Bieberer Berg in the 77th minute in front of 28,000 spectators. He completed all eight games in the successful promotion round and scored four goals. Alemannia rose to the Bundesliga in 1967 with a two-point lead over Offenbach. On the third match day of the 1967/68 BL round, on September 2, 1967, "Heiner" Sell made his debut at home against Karlsruher SC in the Bundesliga. After 0: 4 starting points, the 2: 1 home win brought the first pair of points for Alemannia. When the black and yellow team were able to reach the runner-up in 1968/69 completely surprisingly behind Bayern Munich, who won the championship for the first time, Sell was active in 19 games and scored four goals. After the surprising runner-up championship, Aachen followed the champions of 1968 and the relegated in 1969, and like 1. FC Nürnberg, rose completely unexpectedly from the Bundesliga in 1969/70. Sell had his last BL appearance on April 30, 1970 in the 1: 4 defeat at Werder Bremen.

After relegation, he was active for two more rounds in the second-class Regionalliga West for Alemannia. He now played mostly in midfield and came in 1971/72 under coach Gunther Baumann to 21 missions in which he scored two goals. The Alemannia took fourth place. He played his last regional league game on May 7, 1972 in the 0-1 home defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. After a total of 110 regional league appearances with 23 goals and 44 Bundesliga games with six goals, he ended his activity at Alemannia in the summer of 1972 and joined SG Eschweiler and thus returned to the amateur camp.

From 1973 to 1982 he worked again at Alemannia. He helped the amateurs as a player-coach, worked as a scout, sports advisor and youth coordinator.

The trained electrician took over a textile cleaning company from his former teammate Gerhard Prokop and lives in Aachen.

Sell cites Creutz as the reason for the successes in 1967 and 1969 at Alemannia:

There were football experts in the club who managed to find a mix of players who matched each other both athletically and personally. The Presidium did a lot for the well-being of the team and, in contrast, demanded absolute motivation. A big, if not the biggest part of the success at that time, undoubtedly had the Aachen fans. If we fought until the last minute, we were cheered on until the final whistle. That also applied to games that were not won. "
