Manfred Gärtner (born December 17, 1939 ) is a former German soccer player. In the 1967/68 season he played three Bundesliga games for VfB Stuttgart . He also played for Sportfreunde Saarbrücken , Fortuna Düsseldorf , 1. FC Saarbrücken , Röchling Völklingen and FC Ensdorf in the then second-class regional league .

career

When ASC Dudweiler the footballing career of Manfred Gärtner began. In the Nordsaarbrücker district, with the blue-whites of the ASC, he experienced the first sporting challenges in everyday life in the 2nd league southwest . For the round 1961/62 he moved to the district of Burbach, to the red and whites of the Sportfreunde Saarbrücken in the then regional first class football league Southwest . In his first league season he scored four goals in eleven missions and Sportfreunde finished eighth. In the last year of the old first-class league, 1962/63, he belonged with 29 league appearances and again four goals to the regular formation of the Elf from Burbach, which came in sixth at the end of the round. With 40 league appearances and eight goals, the league chapter for gardeners ended in the summer of 1963 and he played in the 1963/64 round with his club in the new second division of the Southwest Regionalliga. With teammates like Horst Zingraf (goalkeeper), Hans-Jürgen Massion , Josef Christ and Johannes Löhr (35 goals), the sports fans with center runner Gärtner, who had scored four goals in 36 league games, took eighth place. Löhr joined the Bundesliga club 1. FC Köln and Gärtner signed a new contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the Regionalliga West for the 1964/65 round.

At Fortuna, the man from Saarland made his debut on August 30, 1964, in a 2-0 away defeat by Westfalia Herne, in the Regionalliga West. But he could not prevail in the team of coach Kuno Klötzer and teammates such as Hans-Josef Hellingrath , Karl Hoffmann , Peter Meyer , Reinhold Straus and Jürgen Schult and had to be content with a total of ten missions. But the two other newcomers Klaus Beckfeld (3-0) and Gert Fröhlich (7-2) fared no better at Fortuna; Düsseldorf reached 3rd place. Gärtner ended his stay in Düsseldorf after a year and returned to Saarland, he signed a contract with 1. FC Saarbrücken for the 1965/66 season.

In two rounds in the Regionalliga Südwest he was twice runner-up with 1. FC Saarbrücken. In 1966 he was unable to participate in the promotion round of the Bundesliga due to injury, but in 1967 he played in all eight games against competitors Alemannia Aachen, Offenbacher Kickers, Göttingen 05 and Tennis Borussia Berlin and scored three goals. On June 18, he distinguished himself on the Bieberer Berg in a 4-3 win against the local Nuber-Elf with two goals and in the 3-0 home win on June 21st against the newly promoted Aachen Gärtner scored the third goal. Most of the time, the 1st FCS ran in the runner row with Gärtner, Anton Burghardt and Gerd Werthmüller . In particular, his strong performance in the promotion round meant that the Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart Gärtner offered a licensed player contract and he accepted this offer and moved to Swabia for the 1967/68 season.

Under coach Gunther Baumann , he played three times in a row for VfB in the Bundesliga: On November 4, 1967 in a 2-0 home win against Hannover 96, he formed the runner row with Theodor Hoffmann and Klaus-Dieter Sieloff , against FC Bayern Munich (1: 3) and on November 18 in a 4: 1 home win against Borussia Dortmund. He did not gain a foothold in the VfB team around Horst Köppel , Gilbert Gress , Bo Larsson and Karl-Heinz Handschuh . After a year the contract was terminated and he returned to Saarland again, now he signed for the 1968/69 season with SV Röchling Völklingen.

In two rounds with Gärtner Völklingen did not get past 12th and 13th place; Gärtner scored nine goals in 49 league appearances for Röchling. For round 1970/71 he withdrew from the contract players camp and joined the FC Teutonia Landsweiler-Reden in the amateur league Saarland. For the 1972/73 season he was player-coach at FC Ensdorf and won the championship in Saarland and then prevailed in the promotion round to the Regionalliga Südwest together with SG Eintracht Bad Kreuznach. At the age of 33, he joined the regional league with Ensdorf as a player-coach in 1973/74. The round ended with 8:52 points in 16th and last place; away from home Ensdorf was completely overwhelmed with 1:29 points. On March 31, 1974, after the 27th match day and a 5-0 away defeat at SV Alsenborn, Gärtner ended his player-coaching activity at the football club Ensdorf. He himself had played again in 15 games in the Regionalliga and scored one goal. Gärtner has played a total of 135 games and scored 20 goals in the Regionalliga Südwest.

As of 2018, he is a member of the honorary council of 1. FC Saarbrücken alongside Werner Cartarius , Herbert Binkert , Werner Otto and Gerd Roland .
