career

Associations until 1966

Even as a youth at VfL Benrath , the young player drew attention to himself with his performances. The DFB first played international matches with the A-Juniors team from the spring of 1953 and Hoffmann was part of this youth national team in the first international match on March 31. In Liège, the DFB youth won 3-2 against Belgium. In April, the team led by Hoffmann, Ernst-Günter Habig , Uwe Seeler and Klaus Stürmer took part in the UEFA youth tournament in Belgium. In 1954, the year of the soccer World Cup in Switzerland, the DFB organized the outstanding youth tournament and Hoffmann and colleagues scored 2-2 after extra time in the final on April 19 in Cologne against Spain. The tournament winner was Spain because they had the better goal difference from the semi-finals after the division process.

Before the 19-year-old defender "Kalli" Hoffmann moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1955, he had already played 21 league games with his home club VfL Benrath in the 1954/55 season - after the championship in the Lower Rhine regional league in 1953/54 and promotion and collected three goals a round of match practice in the 2nd League West . After switching from the black and whites from the southern district of Benrath to the red and whites from Flinger Broich, "Kalli" Hoffmann completed in his debut round in the Oberliga West, 1955/56, all 30 round games under coach Kuno Klötzer and took part Fortuna took sixth place in the table. His first league game took place on August 27, 1955 in the 2-1 away win at Schalke 04 , where he acted on the side of center runner Erich Juskowiak and half-strikers Matthias Mauritz and Jupp Derwall as a left runner. In 1958 , the year of the soccer World Cup in Sweden, the reliable runner and defender won the West German Cup with his club on June 27 in Wuppertal with a 4-1 win against 1. FC Köln. In the DFB Cup , Hoffmann lost the final on November 16 in Kassel with 3: 4 goals after extra time against VfB Stuttgart. The right runner managed the 1: 1 intermediate result in the 50th minute. The best placement in the league was achieved in 1958/59 with coach Hermann Lindemann , when Fortuna tied on points with runner-up 1. FC Köln - both clubs had a point balance of 39:21 points - landed in third place. "Kalli" Hoffmann played 28 rounds in this round alongside Erich Juskowiak, Matthias Mauritz, Franz-Josef Wolfframm (25 goals), Heinz Janssen and Jupp Derwall, who each scored 17 goals. In the year of the completely surprising relegation to the 2nd League West, 1959/60 , Hoffmann was only able to play 19 games due to injury. With coach Fritz Pliska in 1960/61 he was immediately promoted again. On August 29, 1962 , Hoffmann was for the second time with Fortuna in a DFB Cup final. In Hanover, however, 1. FC Nuremberg prevailed with 2-1 goals in extra time. In the last year Oberliga West, 1962/63 , Fortuna and coach Jupp Derwall could not place in the top group and was therefore not nominated for the new Bundesliga. "Kalli" Hoffmann ended the league era with 27 appearances and was thus able to book a total of 162 league games and two goals from 1955 to 1963.

Hoffmann won with coach Kuno Klötzer in the rounds 1963/64 and 1964/65 each the third places in the football regional league West. When in the third attempt in 1965/66 he won the title and was promoted to the Bundesliga, the veteran was no longer part of the regular line-up after nine appearances. The last regional league game was played by "Kalli" on November 28, 1965 in a 0-0 draw against Black and White Essen . He formed the defender couple with Hans-Josef Hellingrath . He played a total of 70 games in the regional league from 1963 to 1966 and scored two goals.

Selection games, 1955–1956

In the only international match of the German national soccer team of amateurs on November 12, 1955, Karl Hoffmann made his debut in London against England. In the 3-2 success of the DFB-Elf the runners with "Kalli" Hoffmann, Rudolf Hoffmann and Max Schwall were the support of the team. On April 21, 1956, he was appointed as a right wing runner in the B national team for the game in Enschede against the Netherlands. Despite the teammates Heinrich Kwiatkowski , Leo Konopczynski and Willi Koll , the game was lost with 0-1 goals. Four weeks later, the Düsseldorf player played his second amateur international game against France in Freiburg. The highlight for him and his teammates of the amateur national team was participation in the soccer tournament of the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne . On November 24, 1956, the team, trained by DFB coach Georg Gawliczek , played their first game against the clear tournament favorites, the Soviet Union . With the defense of Albert Görtz , Willi Gerdau , Hermann Höfer , Karl Hoffmann, Rudolf Hoffmann and Fritz Semmelmann , reinforced by the retired half-striker Herbert Schäfer , the eventual Olympic champion around the stars Lev Yashin and captain Igor Netto defeated a narrow 1: 2 defeat from, which, however, meant elimination from the tournament.
