In the 1966/67 season he came to the newly promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf in 29 games in the Bundesliga and scored five goals.

Career

Straus played from 1958 to 1963 in the then first-class Oberliga Südwest , initially two years for Phönix Ludwigshafen and then three years for Wormatia Worms . The 20-year-old amateur footballer Reinhold Straus, who came from Gimbsheim in Rhineland-Hesse, made his debut under coach Hans Wendlandt on August 17, 1958 in the away game against Borussia Neunkirchen in the league. In the 1: 2 defeat he played on the half-left in the World Cup system that was predominantly used at the time . At the side of teammates like Horst Amann , Walter Dächert , Fritz glasses , Helmut Oster and Werner Pohl , the newcomer immediately completed 29 league games and scored 23 goals for Phönix. He took third place in the southwest scorer list behind the front runners Rudolf Bast (25) and Helmut Kapitulski (25) together with Werner Emser and Friedel Späth . From the 1960/61 season, the playmaker's talent with scoring qualities played for Wormatia Worms. In the 1961/62 season he was second behind Rudi Dörrenbächer on the list of goalscorers, for the Wormatia he scored 27 times in 30 games. This season, goalkeeper Petar Radenković played 13 games for Wormatia before continuing his career under coach Max Merkel with the "Lions" of Munich 1860. In the last year of the old league system, 1962/63, he came with Worms under coach Radoslav Momirski , the new goalkeeper Srbeljub Krivokuca and center forward Harald Braner after 29 league games with 16 goals in fourth place. For the 1963/64 round, the technician and goal-scoring midfield strategist moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf in the regional soccer league , which had just missed qualifying for the Bundesliga.

With Fortuna he experienced his most successful time as a football player. After two third places in 1964 and 1965 under coach Kuno Klötzer , the Fortuna director succeeded in his third year, the 1965/66 season , the championship and promotion to the Bundesliga . Straus was involved in this success with 16 goals, from Kalli Hoffmann he also took over the captain's armband. The start of the championship round succeeded on August 15, 1965 with a 2-0 away win at Preußen Münster. The fortune attack was started with Bernhard Steffen , Straus, Peter Meyer , Waldemar Gerhardt and Willi Marzok . Dusseldorf prevailed against FK Pirmasens, Hertha BSC and Kickers Offenbach in the promotion round. Straus completed all six games and scored one goal. In the Bundesliga he only played one year with Fortuna and was relegated straight away. The Bundesliga debut came on August 20, 1966 with a 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund. The attack was occupied by Jürgen Koch , Straus, Meyer, Jürgen Schult and Gerhardt. Captain Straus made 29 Bundesliga appearances for Fortuna and scored five goals. After relegation, he moved to Alemannia Aachen for the 1967/68 round , but only played one more game in the Bundesliga for Aachen. Coach Michael Pfeiffer brought him on the last round matchday, on May 25, 1968, in a 2-2 home draw against Hannover 96, next to right winger Heinz-Gerd Klostermann on half right. Straus was then forced to end his professional career due to a knee injury, he still played in the amateur field for TuSpo Richrath.
