history

The club was founded in July 1904 under the name FC Phönix Ludwigshafen , in naming the club followed the example of Phönix Karlsruhe and Phönix Mannheim . The first sports field was at the swing bridge , shortly afterwards the club played at the Sulzerloch . From 1907 there were relocations to the Schießhausplatz , Zuberwiese and the municipal festival meadow before the place at the light, air and sunbathing area was moved into in 1911 , and the Südweststadion was later built on the site of this sports field . In 1905, Phoenix joined the Rhenish Football Association , which, however, disbanded shortly afterwards. By joining the Association of South German Football Associations , Phönix Ludwigshafen took part in regular match operations. In contrast to local rivals FC Pfalz Ludwigshafen , Ludwigshafener FG 03 and Revidia Ludwigshafen , Phoenix initially only played in the B class . Only in the 1911/12 season did the leap into the then first-class A-Class Westkreis succeeded , after Waldhof Mannheim , among others , was defeated in the promotion games . The season ended in last place tied with SC Germania Ludwigshafen . The decision game was won 3-1 against Germania, so that Phoenix held the top class. The club played in the A-class until the First World War and was the best club from Ludwigshafen in 1913/14 .

In 1920/21 Phönix won the Westkreis finals and qualified for the finals of the southern German soccer championship, in which the Ludwigshafeners advanced to the final after a 1-0 win over 1. FC Pforzheim , where they barely beat 1. FC Nürnberg lost 2-1 after extra time. In 1921/22 there was a new league system, from then on Phönix played in the district league Palatinate, which was initially divided into two . After victories over the Ludwigshafen FG 03 , Phönix qualified as district champion Pfalz for the district final of the Rhine against VfR Mannheim . After the first leg ended 0-0, Ludwigshafen had to admit defeat in the second leg with 2: 3, after a 2-0 lead. In 1922/23 the district league Palatinate was won again, this time the district final Rhine against Phoenix Mannheim was successfully designed, so that Phoenix was qualified for the southern German final. In the round-robin tournament , the team was only just beaten by SpVgg Fürth and finished second. In the following years, Phönix Ludwigshafen continued to play in the District League Rhein (later District League Rhein / Saar ), but this did not succeed. In 1932/33 , the club was runner-up behind SV Waldhof Mannheim and qualified for the southern German football final, in which a midfield placement was achieved in the East / West group.

Due to the good performance in the 1932/33 season, Phönix Ludwigshafen qualified for the Gauliga Südwest , founded in 1933 , one of 16 newly founded, first-class Gauligen in Germany. In the first season 1933/34 , the class could only be held because of the better goal quotient compared to SV Wiesbaden . The greatest success in the club's history followed in 1934/35 , when the Gaume Championship was won with a three-point lead over FK Pirmasens . Through this championship, Ludwigshafen qualified for the German soccer championship 1934/35 , in which Ludwigshafen only narrowly failed in the group stage at VfL Benrath after VfR Mannheim and VfR Köln 04 rrh. were beaten. The low point followed as early as the coming 1935/36 season , Phönix Ludwigshafen had violated the amateur statutes and had to forego several players as a result, and a court ban was imposed because of spectator riots at the game against Eintracht Frankfurt. With just eight points, the club was relegated to second class for the first time in its history. With the goal of immediate promotion, Ludwigshafen started the 1936/37 season and won the district class. In the promotion round to the Gauliga 1937/38 , however, the club had to admit defeat to SC Opel Rüsselsheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern and remained in the district class.

In the final stages of the 1936/37 season, under pressure from the National Socialists, the clubs FC Pfalz Ludwigshafen , FC Phönix Ludwigshafen , TuFC Ludwigshafen , TV 1861 Ludwigshafen , Stemm- und Ringclub Ludwigshafen and Kanu-Club Ludwigshafen were merged to form the large club TSG 1861 Ludwigshafen . The Palatinate and Phoenix had the idea of a merger for a long time, without being able to bring themselves to a decisive step. Only months later there was also a merger of the clubs located there in the north of Ludwigshafen to form TuRa Ludwigshafen . The newly formed TSG also won the district class in 1937/38 and took part in the promotion round to the Gauliga Südwest 1938/39 , which this time was successfully designed so that the large club rose again to the Gauliga. In the 1940/41 season , the club was penultimate, but since the Gauligen was divided regionally for the coming season, Ludwigshafen did not rise. From 1941 the club played in the Gauliga Westmark . In the 1943/44 season , the club formed a war syndicate with TSG Oppau and VfL Friesenheim ( KSG Ludwigshafen ).

SV Phoenix 03 Ludwigshafen

After the end of the Second World War , TSG Ludwigshafen was dissolved. The members of the former clubs Pfalz Ludwigshafen and Phönix Ludwigshafen founded the SV Phönix 03 Ludwigshafen , with 1903 reflecting the founding year of FC Pfalz Ludwigshafen . The remaining members re-founded TSG 1861 Ludwigshafen in 1950 , which was renamed TFC 1861 Ludwigshafen shortly afterwards . As early as 1945/46 , Phönix Ludwigshafen was once again playing first-class in the Southwest Football League . In the years to come, secured midfield placements were predominantly achieved. 1961/62 Phoenix had to relegate after a weak season with only 15 points for the first time after 17 years of membership in the upper division in the II. Division . In the 1962/63 season , the rise was successful, with the introduction of the Bundesliga , for which no club from Ludwigshafen was taken into account, Phoenix continued to play second-rate in the Southwest Regional Football League . In the 1963/64 season , the club was 9th, ahead of local rivals Ludwigshafener SC and TuRa Ludwigshafen . In the hope of achieving the Bundesliga through a merger and pooling of forces, TuRa Ludwigshafen merged with Phönix Ludwigshafen on May 29, 1964 to form SV Südwest Ludwigshafen .
