The South German soccer championship 1911/12 of the Association of South German Soccer Clubs was won by Karlsruhe FV in the final tournament with four points ahead of Phoenix Mannheim . This was the eighth and last win of the southern German soccer championship for the Karlsruhe team, who qualified for the German soccer championship 1911/12 . After victories against the Cölner BC 01 and the SpVgg. Leipzig-Lindenau , the Karlsruhe reached the final and met Holstein Kiel as they did two years earlier . In front of 9,000 spectators on Victoria-Platz in today's Hamburg-Lokstedt district, the Karlsruhe-based team, who had been unbeaten for months and had been highly favored, lost 0: 1 to the strong “Storks”.

Mode and overview

The competition format remained unchanged compared to the previous season, in four circles were teams in the round robin tournament against each other, the four district champion then played the South German football champions in a final round. For the following season 1912/13 there was another reform, a new "league class" with eight teams each should replace the previous A-classes as the new top tier. This meant a reduction in the number of teams in three of the four districts, which meant that a number of clubs had to say goodbye to the top division. Not least because of this, there were major mergers in Frankfurt, Mannheim and Nuremberg as early as 1911.

North circle

This season, for the first time ever, a Frankfurt club was able to secure the North District Championship. The Frankfurter FV only came into being in May through the merger of the Frankfurter Kickers with the FFC Victoria and had only played two test matches before the championship kick- off on September 3rd. But already after eight match days they had conquered the championship lead for the first time and it was not until Christmas Eve that FSV suffered their first defeat of the season with a penalty goal (0: 1), which was only followed by another (0: 1 against strong promoted Bürgel ). The mainstays of the championship team were goalkeeper Charbout-Mollart, defender Friedrich Claus , captain of Goldberger , who, however, played his last season due to work, as well as the inner storm Dornbusch - Pickel - Becker .

The Bockenheimer club FFV Amicitia and 1902 caused a tangible scandal: After spectators in the game in Bockenheim hit the Hanau player Möller with sticks, the team was disqualified by the association and excluded from the game for a year. The previous championship games were canceled. Due to the reduction to eight clubs in the following season, no fewer than four teams had to relegate. Frankfurt's "Urverein" Germania 94 managed to secure their place in the top division in the relegation round for eighth place.

In the second season of the Bavaria-wide A-Class, the SpVgg surprisingly sat down . Fürth in front of FA Bayern in the Munich SC . In August 1911, last year's champion had signed Charles Griffiths, an English professional coach, after he failed again in the southern German finals. But the "clovers", which had to put up with heavy defeats against Bayern in the previous season (2: 8 and 0: 6), defied the high championship favorites on Munich Leopoldstrasse on October 15, 1911, and won in the second half of the season on November 26th at the Ronhof with 2-1 and finally overtook the defending champion with the last league game. The catch-up game at FC Wacker Munich was watched by 4,000 spectators, and after the 8-0 win, captain Karl Burger's team was received and celebrated by a large crowd in their hometown.

In the eastern district, too, four teams had to play second class in the following season, including VfB Nürnberg , which was only formed in 1911 through the merger of the three clubs FC Noris, FC Vorwärts and FC Franken Nürnberg. As the eighth club of the first "Ostkreisliga" season, the Würzburger Kickers moved up.

Southern district

The Karlsruher FV secured the championship as safe as in the previous year. The internal storm of the KFV with the national players Fritz Förderer , Gottfried Fuchs and Julius Hirsch again proved to be extremely accurate, so that the team from the Telegrafenkaserne made it into the finals for the third time in a row.

The Strasbourg FV and the three Karlsruhe district clubs FC Mühlburg , Germania Beiertheim and FC Alemannia from Rüppurr, which joined FC Phönix the following season, were relegated . From the B-class, VfB Stuttgart secured the last remaining place for the new league class in a playoff against FC Mühlburg.

Western district

There was a surprise master in the western district. Not the large club VfR Mannheim , which just emerged from the merger of the three Mannheim pioneer clubs , but local rivals and underdog MFC Phönix 02 , who had resisted the merger efforts, secured the Westkreis title. At the end of the season he was tied at the top of the table with FV Kaiserslautern , and since the goal difference - here the FVK was ahead - was not decisive, a playoff had to decide the championship. Here "the Fenix" prevailed in the replay in front of 3,000 spectators on the VfR-Platz with 2-0 and thus made it into the South German finals.

Germania Ludwigshafen was relegated and was replaced by Borussia Neunkirchen in the following season .

Final round of the southern German championship

The game plan for the final round was a bit mixed up due to the two playoffs in the Westkreis, so that the last games could not be played until mid-May. At this point in time, the decision about the southern championship had long been made: the old and record champions KFV beat the three newcomers to the final round from Frankfurt, Mannheim and Fürth without any problems.
