The South German soccer championship of 1903/04 of the Association of South German Soccer Clubs won for the fourth time in a row the Karlsruhe FV , this year in the final with a 5-0 victory against the Frankfurt FC Germania . As in most years before, this championship was also affected by short-term game cancellations and sometimes erratic changes to the original schedule, so that the final phase is difficult to understand from today's perspective. The date, place and result of the final are documented.

In any case, it was the fourth, and according to other sources even fifth, win in the southern German soccer championship for the Karlsruhe team, which qualified them for the German soccer championship in 1903/04 . In this, the Karlsruhe team was eliminated in the first round, but even caused the German football championship to be canceled through a protest against the game standings: the Karlsruhe team had to compete at Britannia 92 Berlin for the first final game of the German championship . The KFV did not complete this game, which was lost with 1: 6, with its best line-up, as some players had not been given a vacation for the long journey. Since the game did not take place in a neutral location as planned, the club lodged a protest against the DFB's evaluation. This objection was only discussed on the morning of the final on May 22, 1904, when the DFB officials met for their annual Bundestag. The DFB recognized the Karlsruhe protest, canceled the final planned for the afternoon and suspended the championship this year. Interestingly enough, the chairman of the KFV, Friedrich Wilhelm Nohe , was elected as the new DFB president at the same conference .

Mode and overview

For the first time game operation in round tournaments , the area of the Association of South German Football Associations (VSFV) was divided into six districts, whose champions qualified for the South German final round. However, the regional conditions were very different. While the Maingau had to be divided into squadrons due to the large number of teams, games throughout Bavaria, for example, were limited to a Munich city championship with a handful of clubs. Across Germany, only 194 clubs belonged to the DFB at the end of the 1903/04 season.

Gau Main

By far the largest participation was in the Rhine-Main area, a total of 32 teams registered for the Maingau, so that a division into squadrons had to be made here. In the Westmain relay, 13 teams competed against each other in an easy round, but Helvetia Bockenheim withdrew its team before the start of the round. Following the VSFV association round, a championship of the Frankfurter Association Bund was held in Frankfurt , in which four teams took part and that of the Frankfurter FC Kickers won.

    Gau Upper Bavaria

In Upper Bavaria, as in previous years, only one Munich city championship was played, in which the following six clubs had participated and from whose autumn series FC Bayern Munich emerged , but according to another source the football department of MTV Munich . It is unknown whether a spring round still took place. In any case, the games listed here are not from the FC Bayern Cup, but from the MFB championship 1903 (autumn round). Although this was won by MTV, FC Bayern took part in the VsFV championship because "no other team had reported".

In the following round, the KFV was supposed to compete at Mannheim 1896 on February 28, 1904, but the game was canceled the day before and, it seems, not rescheduled. Instead, the Mannheimers met Germania Frankfurt (see above), Karlsruhe against the Stuttgarter Kickers.

Wetzler and Zinser were the goal scorers for Karlsruhe.

At that time, FC Germania Frankfurt had not yet been established as champions of the Maingau and was therefore out of the question for this “semi-final”, provided that a Frankfurt or Darmstadt team was still expected to participate. Some previews are formulated in such a way that the new (or old) master would be determined in this game on March 13th. Then things turned out differently.
