Under the name FC Bayern Cup in 1901/02 and FC Bayern Munich Cup in 1902/03, FC Bayern Munich took the initiative to hold a cup competition between the football clubs that existed in Munich and that arose in different parts of the city , to organize.

The development of football in Munich

After football reached Germany from England in 1873, the number of football teams in Munich increased at the turn of the century. In 1899, in addition to 1. Münchner FC von 1896 with FC Bavaria 1899 Munich and the football department in TV 1860 Munich founded on March 6 of that year, two more were added and on February 27, 1900, FC Bayern was created as a spin-off from players from the football department in MTV Munich 1879 .

1. Münchner FC from 1896 were opponents in the first game of FC Bayern Munich, which took place in March 1900 on the municipal playground on Schyrenwiese and which Bayern won 5-2. Also for the later "Löwen", the soccer team in TV 1860 Munich, the club was the opponent in the first public soccer game, they were defeated by the 1. Munich FC of 1896 on July 27, 1902 on the Schyrenwiese with 2: 4.

In 1901 the Association of Munich Football Clubs already existed, but this was "suspended indefinitely for reasons of local nature." In these years Bavaria was comparatively underdeveloped in terms of football, and there were very few clubs in the entire kingdom that practiced the sport. Munich itself, as the largest city in the south, lagged behind developments in other regions. As a result, football was relatively unknown and was limited to a few friendly matches.

Organization of gaming operations

With the increasing number of clubs in Munich, organized games gradually got going. In 1902 and 1903 , on the initiative of FC Bayern Munich, city championships were played for the first time (under the name of FC Bayern Cup or FC Bayern Munich Cup), in which, in addition to the organizer, the 1st Munich FC from 1896, FC Bavaria 1899 and the MTV 1879 involved. The game was played in two classes, with the first teams in the first and the reserves in the second class - as in 1902; It remained unclear whether the football department of TV 1860 Munich and the United Gymnastics Association also took part in the games, and possibly later eliminated.

In both years FC Bayern Munich won these "championships", which were of an unofficial nature, as the Association of South German Football Associations had existed since 1897 and at that time, before autumn 1903, only the final rounds of the association championship, but no point games in organized in the districts, so that the clubs were dependent on their own initiative for regular local game operations. Only then were two local associations formed on October 9, 1903 with the Munich Football Association (MFB) and on October 7, 1904 with the Association of Munich Football Associations (VMFV), which were to organize the championship rounds from now on.

For the 1907/08 season , ten years after the association was founded, a semi-uniform league structure was created for the entire association area. From 1910/11 , the top leagues in all four districts (north, west, south and east) were single-track.
