Career

societies

Kirchner grew up in the west of Bielefeld and initially played on the streets. He was discovered by Hans Büttner, who was managing director and youth leader at Arminia Bielefeld at the time. At the age of fourteen he made the leap into the A-youth . With this team, Kirchner won the West German Championship on July 8, 1961 with a 2-1 victory for Bielefeld in the Duisburg Wedaustadion against Duisburg SpV . Kirchner and Bernd Naschke scored the goals for Arminia . This season, Arminias A-Jugend won all 44 games with a goal difference of 226: 38 goals. Bernd Kirchner scored 77 goals alone and was considered the greatest talent that the club produced after the end of the Second World War .

For the 1962/63 season, Bernd Kirchner moved up together with Bernd Naschke, Jürgen Diekmann , Wolfgang Schlichthaber and Peter Dammann in the first team that played in the second-class II Division West at the time. With seventh place in the 1962/63 season, Arminia qualified for the newly created, second-class Regionalliga West . In 26 league games, Kichner had scored twelve goals for Arminia, trained by Jakob Wimmer (20 games) and Hellmut Meidt (10 games). Despite several inquiries from the Bundesliga , Kirchner stayed in Bielefeld in the following years because he did not want to leave the city. At the beginning of 1965 Kirchner wanted to end his professional career. He told the Westfälische Zeitung that he wanted to be reamateurised and that he wanted to concentrate on his training, which was a “more rewarding goal” for him.

Even though he “did not want to extend his contract at all”, Kirchner continued to play for Arminia. In 1966 he and his team won the West German Cup with a 3-2 final victory over Alemannia Aachen . A year later , the Bielefeld team came third in the Regionalliga West. To achieve the runner-up in the Regionalliga West 1969/70 and the associated entry into the promotion round to the Bundesliga, Bernd Kirchner contributed significantly. But he no longer took part in the successful promotion round. He played his last game on April 19, 1970 in the top game against VfL Bochum , which Arminia won with 2-0 goals. According to Kirchner, the reason for his early retirement were arguments with coach Egon Piechaczek . He accused him that Kirchner “only had his architecture studies on his mind” and was a “stupid soccer player”.

National team

19-year-old Bernd Kirchner was appointed to the amateur national team for the first time by DFB coach Helmut Schön on June 5, 1963 in Siegen against Japan. He contributed a goal to the 4-0 success of the German team. From October 12 to 16, 1963, Kirchner took part in the pre-Olympic tournament in Tokyo . He came in the second tournament game on October 14, 1963, both in the 2-1 win against the South Vietnamese team, and in the final 1-1 draw against the A-selection of Japan , and contributed with one goal to the tournament win.

In addition, Kirchner was used in an unofficial match against the national soccer team of the GDR . DFB coach Helmut Schön advised his players during the half-time break: "Play more to Bernd, he has no fool's freedom". The then national coach Sepp Herberger recognized in Bernd Kirchner a player with “great talent”.

After the career

In addition to his professional career, he completed a degree in architecture and also worked as a carpenter , bricklayer , steel fitter and draftsman . When he finished his footballing career in 1970, he took a position in the Bielefeld building construction department. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Arminia Bielefeld's club in 2005, Bernd Kirchner was voted into the eleven of the century by the fans .
