Clair-obscur is a saxophone quartet founded in 1997 and based in Berlin .
history
The four saxophonists got to know each other during their studies at what is now the UdK Berlin . Fascinated by the musical and tonal dimensions made possible by the saxophone quartet, the young musicians tried to live out this versatility and make it accessible to their audience.
In addition to the great classical works, such as Alexander Glasunov's saxophone quartet, they play transcriptions from different centuries. These arrangements (mostly created by the tenor saxophonist of the ensemble Christoph Enzel) were also published.
Another focus of her repertoire is new music: on the one hand through her individual interpretation of existing works, but also in collaboration with composers with the aim of expanding the repertoire of the saxophone. The clair-obscur saxophone quartet played in New York's Carnegie Hall in December 2005 and has won prizes in the following competitions:
- Gaudeamus International Music Competition 2007
- International chamber music competition of the ADMC Illzach 2007
- Alice Samter Chamber Music Competition of the UdK Berlin
The musicians teach at various universities and impart their knowledge in international master classes .
Since 2015 clair-obscur has had its own series of concerts at Ballhaus Berlin. Under the motto "clair-obscur meets ..." they invite other guests to every concert, so far u. a. Stefan Schulz (bass trombonist of the Berliner Philharmoniker), the Hungarian jazz musicians Veronica Harcsa, the Junk-Cat, the actors Boris Aljinovic and Rolf Becker and the pianist Elisaveta Blumina .
