As part of the municipal structural reform in Styria , it has been merged with the municipalities of Pichl-Preunegg and Schladming since 2015, the new municipality continues to bear the name Stadtgemeinde Schladming. The community consisted of the two localities and cadastral communities Rohrmoos and Untertal.

The main settlement area is the north-eastern slope of the Hochwurzen with numerous courtyards, inns and hotels. Then there is the Fastenberg on the northwest slope of the Planai and the two narrow, but elongated Tauern valleys Obertal and Untertal . The two streams from these valleys unite in the north of the community to form the Talbach, which breaks through a narrow gorge steeply to Schladming.
In the mountains on the former southern boundary of the municipality ( zinc wall , cousin peaks ), mining was carried out from the early Middle Ages to the 19th century , mainly silver , nickel and zinc . Parts of these facilities are now a museum and show mine.
At the end of the lower valley are the Riesach Falls, which are considered to be the highest waterfalls in Styria. Numerous mountain lakes, including the Giglachseen , the Duisitzkarsee and the Riesachsee, offer popular hiking destinations.
