Gernot Reinstadler (born August 24, 1970 ; † January 19, 1991 in Interlaken , Switzerland ) was an Austrian ski racer .

Reinstadler, who comes from Tyrol, was the son of the former ski racer Traudl Eder and the ski instructor trainer Adi Reinstadler. He belonged to the squad of the Austrian Ski Federation and participated in the Junior World Championships in 1988 and 1989 in part, where his best result was a 13th place in the downhill 1989th Also in 1989 he won three medals at the Austrian youth championships. He made his first appearances in the World Cup and started training for the Lauberhorn downhill in Wengen in 1991. After finishing 29th and 39th in the two training runs, he took part in the qualification downhill on January 18, when the 30 fastest runners qualified for the World Cup downhill. This new mode, decided by the FIS , was used as a test at the time and was consistently controversial among the drivers.

Reinstadler started the qualifying race with start number 44. It tilted in the target S due to insufficient pressure on the outer ski and flew unchecked into the safety net to the right of the direction of travel on the target slope. A ski tip got caught in the net, causing a rupture of the pelvis and severe injuries to the blood vessels in his abdomen. Reinstadler was brought to the Interlaken hospital after the first aid on the route . On January 19 at 12:43 a.m. he died “of the consequences of the life-threatening vascular injuries that he sustained in the fall. Despite the massive blood transfusion even after the operation, he passed away because of the heavy bleeding from the pelvic area. In the fall, the right leg was almost torn off, which led to the most severe fractures, nerve and blood vessel injuries ”, according to the press bulletin of the anesthesia department at Interlaken Hospital.

The qualifying race had been driven to the end after Reinstadler's fall, but the rest of the racing program was canceled after the news of his death. As a result of the accident, cut-resistant protective tarpaulins were developed, later the terrain was removed during the target jump and the target jump was massively defused. In the finish house of the Lauberhorn races, a memorial plaque has been commemorating Gernot Reinstadler since 1992.
