Shelley Glover (born May 14, 1986 in Madison , Wisconsin , † May 8, 2004 in Bend , Oregon ) was an American ski racer .

Career

Glover learned to ski at the age of three. As a child she was part of the Madison Alpine Race Team and trained in the nearby Tyrol Basin ski area . She was also a good swimmer and promising soccer player , but after her junior year at Madison West High School decided to focus fully on skiing and moved to Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont . In 2002 she was accepted into the junior squad of the US ski team and developed as a great young talent in the technical disciplines.

Glover contested her first FIS races in December 2001, and just four months later she celebrated her first victory in the giant slalom in Breckenridge . From November 2002 she started in the Nor-Am Cup and was able to achieve her first top ten placement in January 2003. In the 2003/04 season she was able to win two FIS races and achieved several placements among the top ten in the Nor-Am Cup, including fifth place in the Georgian Peaks slalom on March 12th. With these successes she finished 6th in the final ranking in the slalom classification. At the US Championships in 2004, she reached eighth place in the slalom.

On May 5, 2004, Glover suffered severe head injuries in a training fall on Mount Bachelor , from the consequences of which she died three days later at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend, a few days before her 18th birthday. In memory of her, the "Shelley Glover Ski Education Foundation" was founded, whose main task is to support young American skiers in training and with financial means.
