biography

Sara Mustonen won a total of 25 Finnish championship medals between 1975 and 1979, 10 of which were in the women's category. Mustonen took part in her first race when she was five and was always the best in her age group in Finland. In 1973 she was fourth in the slalom at the Trofeo Topolino . In March 1976 she won all three competitions at the Nordic Junior Championships in Alpine Skiing (Kalle Anka Trofén) in Duved, Åre . A week later, she could look forward to her first championship medals in the women's category.

Mustonen won the slalom championship in 1977 and 1978, the giant slalom championship in 1978 and 1979, and downhill in 1979. She represented the sports club Ounasvaaran Hiihtoseura and had been part of the Finnish alpine ski team since 1976. At the 1978 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Mustonen was the only woman to represent Finland. In the downhill she reached the 40th place and in the giant slalom the 44th place. In the slalom she was eliminated in the second round. At the open Swedish championship in 1978 in Dundret, Gällivare , she finished third in the giant slalom, and she was fourth in the slalom.

In the poll for the best athlete of the year, Mustonen was named the best skier of the year 1977 and 1978 by the Finnish sports journalists.

Sara Mustonen was killed in a skiing accident on the Hintertux Glacier in Austria. When the Finnish alpine ski team was training on an unsecured slope, the 16-year-old Mustonen fell into a crevasse and had a fatal accident.
