The Wupperbrücke Tiergartentreppe, also known as the former gasworks bridge or old gasworks bridge , was a road bridge over the Wupper in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . It was demolished in May 2011.
description
The trapezoidal steel truss bridge from 1892 (according to another source: 1882) led from Friedrich-Ebert-Straße to the former Elberfeld gas works. The site of the former gas works was built over by Bayer AG and is now used by Bayer HealthCare . Adjacent to the bridge is the publicly accessible Tiergartentreppe pedestrian staircase , which first crosses the Bayer parent plant and then the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld railway line and leads to Tiergartenstrasse .
The Varresbeck station of the Wuppertal suspension railway is located directly on this bridge, which was a listed building . The monument status was determined by the Rhenish Office for Monument Preservation on April 16, 1997.
The bridge has a length of 36.40 m and a width of 5.20 m. The road surface consists of a paving ; the former wooden structure of the two walkways (beams and planking) was replaced in 1962 by a continuous 12 cm thick reinforced concrete slab with mastic asphalt covering.
Current development
The bridge was last used only as a pedestrian bridge and was completely closed in July 2007 due to structural defects. The alternative access to the Tiergarten stairs was achieved via the approaching suspension railway station. The costs for a comprehensive renovation, which would also replace the historical substance, were then put at 592,000 euros. The renovation would be tantamount to a new building; due to the poor budget situation in the city of Wuppertal, an application to demolish the bridge was initiated. The demolition costs were estimated at 85,000 euros.
The demolition took place on the night of May 28th to 29th, 2011, with the help of two truck-mounted cranes it was divided and placed on the nearby Friedrich-Ebert-Straße.
