biography

Sertorelli was born the seventh of eleven children of Costante Sertorelli. He followed the passion of his older brothers for skiing with enthusiasm: Erminio took part in the 1932 Winter Olympics as a cross-country skier , Stefano was a member of the Italian military patrol team . At the age of five he was on skis for the first time and made his first descents.

In 1931 he won the slalom at the Italian junior championships in Asiago and was applauded by the technical trainers present. When he switched to the senior sector, however, he decided to focus on downhill skiing. At this time he met the Austrian trainer Leo Gasperl , who had gathered Italy's best downhill skiers in Claviere . He recognized Sertorelli's talent and became his sponsor.

In the run-up to the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where alpine competitions were on the program for the first time, the Italian skiers went to Sestriere . There Sertorelli prevailed in the team's internal qualification. In the Olympic race, he finished the downhill in 9th place. In the slalom on the Gudiberg it looked like a top place for him for a long time. When trying to avoid a Bulgarian runner who had fallen in front of him, he fell himself. He made it to the finish line and finished ninth. In the combined ranking, he finished 7th.

Two weeks later, at the World Ski Championships in Innsbruck, he only had to admit defeat to the Swiss Rudolf Rominger . On his return he was received with great applause in his home town of Bormio.

The following winter, Sertorelli took part in 16 international races. He won 12 and was second twice. At the World Championships in Chamonix , he repeated his success from the previous year and again won the silver medal behind the Frenchman Émile Allais .

On the occasion of the international ski week in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in January 1938, he took part in the Kandahar race . In the meantime, he was in first place on an icy track. At the steepest point, trying to drive around an unmarked hump, it came off the slope and crashed into a tree. He sustained serious injuries to which he died in hospital on the morning of January 28, 1938.
