Josip Mrzljak (born January 19, 1944 in Vukovar , Independent State of Croatia ) is a Croatian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Varaždin .

Life

Josip Mrzljak attended elementary and middle school in Krašić . In 1959 he continued his education in the archiepiscopal high school “Šalata” in Zagreb . There he finished his school career in 1963 when he graduated from high school. He studied theology at the Catholic Faculty in Zagreb. On November 16, 1969, he received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Zagreb from Archbishop Franjo Kuharić in the Zagreb Cathedral . His first Mass he celebrated on 30 November of the same year in Krasić. He then worked as a chaplain in the parishes of Sigetec , Hrvatski Leskovac and Koprivnica . After that he was pastor in Ozalj for eight years and also looked after the parish of Vrhovac. From 1980 he was pastor in Svesvetski Kraljevac for 18 years ; During this time he was instrumental in building a new parish church. In the summer of 1998 Archbishop Josip Bozanić appointed him Episcopal Vicar and Cathedral Chapter as well as head of the Archbishop's Department for Vocations .

On 29 December 1998 it appointed Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Caltadria and auxiliary bishop in Zagreb. The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Bozanic on 6 February 1999 in the Cathedral of Zagreb; Co- consecrators were the retired Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Franjo Kuharić and Archbishop Giulio Einaudi , Apostolic Nuncio in Croatia. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on March 20, 2007 Bishop of Varaždin.

Mrzljak was President of Croatian Caritas and President of the Episcopal Commission for Croatian Caritas at the Croatian Bishops' Conference .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 1, 2019.
