Marko Culej (born January 19, 1938 in Repno - Hec Belec, Krapina-Zagorje County ; † August 19, 2006 in Varaždin ) was the first bishop of Varaždin .

Life

He attended elementary school in his hometown. After graduating from high school in 1957, he entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Zagreb . After completing his studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology of the University of Zagreb , he was ordained a priest on April 24, 1964 . After his time as chaplain, he was pastorally active in the community for over ten years . As dean of the Taborskog deanery, he was a member of the priestly council of the archdiocese. In 1981 he became vice-rector of the seminary and in 1986 Archbishop Franjo Kuharić appointed him to the cathedral chapter as head of the vocational pastoral center in the Archdiocese of Zagreb.

On January 7, 1992 he was appointed auxiliary bishop in Zagreb and titular bishop of Limata by Pope John Paul II . He received his episcopal ordination on February 22, 1992 in the cathedral in Zagreb Franjo Cardinal Kuharić , the Archbishop of Zagreb; Co - consecrators were Djuro Kokša and Juraj Jezerinac , auxiliary bishops in Zagreb. He became Regens of the Archbishop's Seminary in Zagreb and head of the Council for the preparation of the Pope's visit to Croatia in 1994. In 1993 Cardinal Kuharić appointed him his vicar general .

On July 5, 1997, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the Varaždin diocese, which was newly founded on the same day. The solemn introduction to his diocese took place on September 28, 1997 in the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Varazdin, which on that day became the diocese's cathedral.

In the Croatian Bishops' Conference (CBC) he was:

  • President of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life
  • Chairman of the mass media of the CCB and the "Justitia et Pax" commission
  • Chairman of the CCB for the Pastoral Roma
  • Chairman of the CCB for the pastoral care of prisoners
  • He was also president of the Croatian branch of the World Conference of Religions for Peace (WCRP).

Bishop Marko Culej died on August 19, 2006 and was buried in Varaždin Cathedral.
