Fryco Rocha (around 1900)

Fryco Rocha (German Friedrich Rocha ; born January 29, 1863 in Schönhöhe , † April 24, 1942 in Klingmühl ) was a Lower Sorbian teacher, writer and folk poet.

Life

Fryco Rocha was born in the village of Schönhöhe , spent his childhood there and attended the Sorbian school. From 1882 to 1885 he attended the teachers' college in Altdöbern . After a short year of apprenticeship in Eulo (near Forst ), he began teaching in Kolkwitz from 1885 to 1890 , where many of his first Lower Sorbian poems were written.

Despite the ban , he taught in Tauer from 1891 to 1915 in Lower Sorbian . Since no teaching materials were available for Sorbian lessons, Rocha wrote about 300 stories and songs that he included in his lessons. In 1894 the second singing concert took place in Tauer with his help.

In 1931 he replaced Mina Witkojc as editor of the Lower Sorbian newspaper Casnik . However, his editorial work is not entirely undisputed. After the Gleichschaltung, enthusiastic articles and words of praise for National Socialism were published . But even with loyalty Rocha could not prevent the end of Casnik. On July 29, 1933, he declared the newspaper bankrupt.

The documentary filmmaker Peter Rocha was his grandson.

He was a member and for a long time deputy chairman of Maśica Serbska .
