St. Demetrius Cathedral

The Cathedral Basilica of St. Demetrius ( Serbian - Cyrillic Римокатоличка црква Светог Димитрија ), also called the Cathedral of Sremska Mitrovica , is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Sremska Mitrovica in Vojvodina , Serbia .

history

The church is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Syrmia (Dioecesis Sirmiensis or Сремска бискупија) with areas in Serbia and Croatia . It was first created in the fourth century and approved by Pope Gregory IX in 1229 . restored.

In 1984 it was promoted to co- cathedral and in 1991 was given the title of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II . In 1997 the church was added to the list of cultural objects of great importance. With the restoration of the Diocese of Syrmia in 2008, the church became a cathedral.

Church building

The single-nave church building was built in 1810 in the classical style and consecrated on June 30th of the year to Demetrios of Thessaloniki , the patron of the city. The ends of the building form a semicircular altar apse in the south and a high bell tower above the north facade. The flat columns adorned with dorsal capital emphasize the vertical structure of the facade and form the fields in which the window openings are located. The main portal is framed by pilasters over which the tympanum is located.
