Brseč (outdated German: Berschezh ) is a small town in the municipality of Mošćenička Draga in Croatia .
Geographical location
Brseč is located on the Kvarner Bay or on the Istrian peninsula , around 20 km south of Opatija . The town center lies on a coastal rock, about 157 meters above sea level.
history
Around 1300 a castle was built on the steep rocky coast, which together with Mošćenice , Veprinac and Kastav formed a chain of fortresses along the east coast of Istria. A medieval settlement and the parish church of St. Juraj (George) were built around the castle. With defensive walls around the entire city, the inhabitants were protected from enemies. Many buildings from that time are still preserved in their original form.
Personalities
Brseč is known as the birthplace of the Croatian writer Eugen Kumičić (1850–1904). He was a great opponent of Hungarian politics. However, he became famous for his work as a book author. The Conspiracy of the Zrinski and the Frankopans and The Wondered Wedding Guests were two of his most famous books.
