Laurean Rugambwa

Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa (born July 12, 1912 in Bukongo in Tanzania , † December 8, 1997 in Dar es Salaam ) was Archbishop of Dar es Salaam and from 1960 the first black African cardinal .

Life

The future cardinal was born in 1912 in the small town of Bukongo in what was then Tanganyika ( German East Africa , today: Tanzania) and was baptized by a father of the mission society of the “ White Fathers ”. He also passed through the mission school , studied Catholic theology and received on 12 December 1943, the sacrament of Holy Orders . 1948 studied Rugambwa in Rome at the Pontifical College San Pietro Apostolo and was established in 1951 with a thesis entitled De validitate matrimonii infidelium in Buhaya ( "On the validity of the marriage of infidels in Buhaya ") at the Pontifical Urban University for Dr. iur. can. PhD .

Pius XII. appointed on December 13, 1951 the only 39-year-old titular bishop of Febiana and apostolic vicar of Kagera Inferiore . He received his episcopal ordination on February 10, 1952 by Archbishop David Mathew .

In 1953 the Apostolic Vicariate Kagera Inferiore was canonically established as the Diocese of Rutabo and Rugambwa became its first bishop. The diocese was renamed in 1960 in Bukoba , after a town on Lake Victoria . On March 28, 1960, Pope John XXIII. with the appointment of Rugambwa as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Francesco d'Assisi a Ripa Grande and first African cardinal for a real ecclesiastical sensation. After the Pope's death, he took part in the conclave in 1963 . From 1968 he was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania. In 1978 he took part in the two conclaves in August and October . He did not resign from the leadership of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam until 1992.

Laurean Rugambwa died in 1997 in his former bishopric Dar es Salaam at the age of 85.

Trivia

  • In 1961 the cardinal received an honorary doctorate in law from the University of Notre Dame.
  • Before returning to Tanzania after the August 1978 conclave, he visited the United States, where he received news of the death of Pope John Paul I.
