Polycarp Cardinal Pengo (born August 5, 1944 in Mwazye , Tanzania ) is a Tanzanian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Life

Pengo attended secondary school at the Minorite College in Kaengesa from 1959 to 1964 . In 1965 he entered the seminary of Kipalalpala and studied three years of philosophy (from 1965 to 1967) and four years of Catholic theology (from 1968 to 1971).

On June 20, 1971, Pengo was ordained a priest for the diocese of Sumbawanga . For the next two years, from June 1971 to July 1973, he served as secretary to the bishop .

From 1973 to 1977 he studied moral theology at the Pontifical Lateran University (Academy of St. Alphonsus) and earned a doctorate . After his studies he returned to Tanzania and taught moral theology in 1977 at the seminary of Kipalalpala. Then he was called to the rain of the advanced seminar of Segerea . Pengo held this position from 1978 to 1983.

On November 11, 1983, Pengo was appointed Bishop of Nachingwea by Pope John Paul II . The episcopal ordination by the Pope took place on the Epiphany (January 6th) 1984 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , co- consecrators were Eduardo Martínez Somalo , substitute for the Cardinal Secretary of State , and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy , Archbishop Emeritus of Bangalore and Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . Pengo took office on February 19, 1984.

On October 17, 1986 he was appointed bishop of the newly established diocese of Tunduru-Masasi , where he was installed on February 12, 1987.

Pengo succeeded Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa on July 22, 1992 , after he had been appointed coadjutor archbishop there on January 22, 1990 .

In the consistory of February 21, 1998, Pope John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Nostra Signora de La Salette in the college of cardinals .

Since 2007 he has been President of SECAM ( Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar ). He participated in the 2013 conclave that Pope Francis elected.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 15, 2019.
