Barham Ahmad Salih ( Kurdish بەرھەم ئەحمەد ساڵح Berhem Ehmed Salih ; Arabic برهم أحمد صالح, DMG Barham Aḥmad Ṣāliḥ ; * 1960 in  Sulaimaniyya ) is a Kurdish politician and President of Iraq since October 2018.

Life

Barham Salih studied civil engineering at Cardiff University and statistics and computational modeling at the University of Liverpool (PhD). He is one of the leaders of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union (PUK), which he joined in 1976. He has been said to have very good relations with the USA , as he u. a. also represented the PUK in the USA for ten years. In April 2002, he survived an assassination attempt at his home in Sulaimaniyya.

After the local elections in the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in 2009, Barham Salih was elected as the new Prime Minister of the regional government in September 2009. He held this office for two years and was then replaced by Nêçîrvan Barzanî .

In September 2017, Salih left the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and one month later founded his own party, the Coalition for Democracy and Justice . His party's aim was to fight corruption in the government. She was supposed to run for the Iraqi and Kurdish parliamentary elections in 2018. Before the Kurdish parliamentary election in September 2018, however, Salih left his party and rejoined the PUK. She was eventually nominated as a candidate for President of Iraq . On October 2, 2018, almost five months after the Iraqi parliamentary election , he was elected President of Iraq through a parliamentary vote.
