Almost 7,000 candidates, around 2,000 of them women, applied for the 329 parliamentary seats. A total of 87 party lists ran for election.

Election result

Supporters of al-Sadr after the preliminary election results were communicated

According to preliminary results, the electoral alliance “Sairun”, consisting of the nationalist movement of the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr (who did not run for election) and secular forces (including the Iraqi Communist Party , ICP), received the most votes before the alliance “Fateh “(Conquest) led by Popular Mobilization (PMF). Prime Minister Abadi's alliance “Nasr” (victory) came third. As-Sadr's alliance calls for a government of technocrats in which posts are assigned based on ability rather than membership of a religious group or political loyalties.

Based on reports of irregularities, Parliament decided to recount completely.
