Ghazi I.
Ghazi I. ( Arabic غازي الأول, DMG Ġāzī al-awwal ; * March 21, 1912 in Mecca ; † April 4, 1939 near Baghdad ) or Ghasi bin Faisal was King of Iraq from 1933 until his death .
Life
Ghazi was born in 1912 as the son of Faisal I and took over the government in Iraq after his death in 1933. After the end of British mandate rule and the independence of the Kingdom of Iraq , the Assyrian massacre of the Nestorian Christians in Iraq, who had served the British as auxiliary troops during their mandate rule, occurred in 1933 . He promoted nationalism against British domination and tolerated a military coup in 1936. The military thus became increasingly important in Iraqi politics.
On January 25, 1934, in Baghdad, he married Princess Aliya bint Ali, daughter of Ali ibn Hussein , king of the Hejaz and granddaughter of Hussein ibn Ali . Their only son was Faisal II , who was born on May 2, 1935.
death
The king suffered a fatal skull fracture on April 4, 1939 when he caused a car accident while under the influence of alcohol. Assassinations by Iraqi opponents or the British government have been suspected among the Iraqi population and nationalist circles. To date, the theory has not been supported by evidence.
