The President of the Republic of Iraq is the head of state, symbol of the country's unity and represents its sovereignty.

history

The basis for his office is the Iraqi constitution of 2005 . This was applied for the first time in the elections for the Council of Representatives in December 2005 . Following was Jalal Talabani second president after the fall of Saddam Hussein . He replaced Ghazi al-Yawar . Barham Salih has held this office since the 2018 elections .

Constitutional status since 2005

A presidential candidate may have to a. an Iraqi by birth to Iraqi parents, fully elective, and at least 40 years of age. His term of office is limited to 4 years and can only be re-elected once for a further electoral term. The following is a selection of his powers:

  • Ratification of international treaties and agreements after approval by the Council of Representatives
  • Ratification and enactment of laws passed by the Council of Representatives
  • Call for a presidential law to meet the Council of Representatives within 15 days of the ratification of the official election result
  • Issuing presidential decrees
  • Ratification of death sentences
  • Supreme command of the armed forces for solemn and honorary purposes
