The Gelmerbahn is a funicular in the municipality of Guttannen in the Bernese Haslital in Switzerland .

It leads from Handegg up to the Gelmersee and has a maximum gradient of 106%. The operator calls it the steepest open funicular in Europe. Since 2017, the Stoosbahn has been the steepest funicular with a gradient of 110%.

location

The journey in an open car leads from Handegg ( 1400  m above sea level ) in the Haslital, between Innertkirchen and the Grimsel Pass , up to Gelmersee ( 1850  m above sea level ), a reservoir of the Oberhasli power plants .

Public trips take place from June to October.

history

The factory railway was built for the construction of the Gelmer dam and the water supply to the Handeck power station and began operation in 1926. In 2001 it had to be completely renewed and Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (KWO) decided to equip the Gelmerbahn for public operation. Initially, only eight people were allowed to travel per journey because the railway only had a cantonal operating license. Because of the large number of visitors, it was decided to apply for a federal license. Since 2004 - after minor technical adjustments - the full capacity can be used.
