The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dar-es- Salaam ( lat. Archidioecesis Daressalaamensis , Swahili Jimbo Kuu la Dar-es-Salaam ) is in Tanzania situated Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Dar es Salaam .
history
The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam was on November 16, 1887 by Pope Leo XIII. established from the cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate of Zanzibar as the Apostolic Prefecture of South Zanzibar . On September 15, 1902, the Apostolic Prefecture of South Zanzibar was by Leo XIII. raised to the apostolic vicariate . The Apostolic Vicariate of South Zanzibar changed its name to the Apostolic Vicariate of Dar es Salaam on August 10, 1906 . On November 12, 1913, the Vicariate Apostolic Dar es Salaam gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Lindi . Another assignment of territory took place on March 3, 1922 to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Iringa .
On March 25, 1953, the Vicariate Apostolic Dar es Salaam by Pope Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam gave up parts of its territory on April 21, 1964 to establish the Diocese of Mahenge .
