The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi ( lat. : Archidioecesis Nairobiensis ) is in Kenya located Metropolitan Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Nairobi .
history
The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Nairobi is the Zanguebar Apostolic Prefecture , which was founded on February 26, 1860 from the Bishopric of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion and was elevated to an Apostolic Vicariate on November 23, 1883 . On November 16, 1887 the vicariate was divided; to the Apostolic Vicariates of North Zanzibar and South Zanzibar . On January 21, 1904, on September 14, 1905 and on May 11, 1906, the Vicariate Apostolic of North Zanzibar gave up parts of its territory to establish the Apostolic Prefecture of Benadir , the Mission sui juris Kenya and the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Zanzibar . On December 21, 1906, the name was changed to the Apostolic Vicariate of Zanzibar .
Today's Archdiocese of Nairobi was founded on March 25, 1953. Since then, the Archdiocese gave up various parts of its territory to establish new bishoprics: on May 8, 1955, the Bishopric of Mombasa and Zanzibar , on February 20, 1956, the Apostolic Prefecture Kitui , on October 20, 1959, the Apostolic Prefecture Ngong , on December 12th In 1964 the Apostolic Administration of Zanzibar and Pemba , the Diocese of Nakuru on January 11, 1968 and the Diocese of Machakos on May 29, 1969 .
