The diocese of Ngong ( Latin Dioecesis Ngongensis ) is one of five Roman Catholic dioceses in Kenya that is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Nairobi as a suffragan . The seat of the diocese is Karen , a suburb of Nairobi .

history

The diocese was founded on October 20, 1959 as the Apostolic Prefecture out of the Diocese of Kisumu and the Archdiocese of Nairobi . On December 9, 1976, the Apostolic Prefecture Ngong was raised to an independent diocese. The diocese is located in the Ngong region, the homeland of the Maasai , in southern Kenya on the border with Tanzania and includes the former administrative districts of Kajiado, Narok and Transmara in today's counties of Kajiado and Narok .

The diocese has 29 parishes and operates two high schools (boys / girls), four elementary schools , a hospital , four health centers and nine pharmacies . The diocese is also involved in nine vocational training centers and three homes for disabled children.

The Mill Hill Missionaries (St. Joseph's Missionaries of Mill Hill) have been active in what is now Kenya since 1895 and have founded numerous schools, hospitals and health centers in the parishes they look after. The bishops of the Diocese of Ngong all came from the Mill Hill Missionary Institute. The Congregation of Carmelites of the Immaculate Mother of God ( Carmelites of Mary Immaculate , CMI) is committed to education and training for sustainable livestock and agriculture.
