Carmelites of Mary Immaculate

The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate ( Latin Congregatio Fratrum Carmelitarum Beatae Mariae Virginis Immaculatae , abbreviation : CMI ) - "The Congregation of Carmelites of the Immaculate Mother of God" - are a Roman Catholic male order .

history

This belongs to the Syro-Malabar Church founded by Apostle Thomas and united with Rome and is the first order to be founded in India . The order's first monastery was established on May 11, 1831 on Mount Mannanam in the state of Kerala . Soon there was enormous expansion, and the young community devoted itself to the renewal of church life through the training of local priests, popular missions and press apostolate, upbringing and education of the youth through the establishment of schools and boarding schools, and also serving the poor and the sick through charitable organizations.

The founders of the congregation were the priest Thomas Palackal (1780–1841), together with his relative (on his mother's side) Father Thomas Kathanar (1799–1846) and his disciple, the holy curiac Elias Chavara (1805–1871), who was also the first superior of the Order was. Since 2014 the superior of the order (here called: "General Prior ") is Brother Paul Achandy.

The order has been active in Germany since 1957.

Current

In 2003 the community had 3226 members (7 bishops; 2100 religious priests; 55 friars; 482 students of philosophy and theology; 208 novices; 374 candidates) in 13 provinces (all in India) and 263 religious houses. In 2017 there are about 3000 members with 1875 priests and 156 novices.

Aanchal aid organization

In 2010, CMI founded the Aanchal charity. This project is dedicated to street children in Bhopal, India. Aanchal was inaugurated on March 1, 2011 by Father Jose Paul Eduthan CMI and has been led by Father Anil CMI ever since. The Aanchal Mission has set itself the task of paving the way for street children - regardless of denomination - to a better future.
