Thomas Palackal Malpan

Thomas Palackal Malpan CMI ( Malayalam പാലയ്ക്കൽ തോമ്മാ മൽപാൻ , * 1780 in Pallippuram near Alleppey , Kerala , India ; † January 16, 1841 ibid) was an Indian Syro-Malabar clergyman and founder of the order.

Life

He was ordained a priest in 1804 . In 1809 he opened a minor seminary where candidates for the priesthood were trained; as head of the seminary, he bore the title of Malpan (from ancient Syriac malpānā , archpriest '). He was also secretary and adviser to the Vicar Apostolic of Verapoly , Bishop Raymund Roviglia OCD. On behalf of Bishop Roviglia, he toured all Syro-Malabar parishes and reformed their parish life. He also established a local religious order and a seminary . To achieve these goals he worked with the priest Thomas Porukara . Another collaborator was his student Kuriakose Elias Chavara . Together they founded the first monastery of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate on May 11, 1831 on Mount Mannanam in the state of Kerala . A seminary was established here in 1832, in which secular and religious priests are trained.

Thomas Palackal Malpan died in Pallipuram and was buried in the local church.
