Bishop Emil Allgeyer

Emil August Allgeyer CSSp , also Emile-August Allgeyer (born April 14, 1856 in Rixheim ; † April 9, 1924 in Chevilly , near Paris ) was a Catholic priest from Alsace, Spiritaner - missionary father in the Sultanate of Zanzibar and in German East Africa and from 1897 to 1913 Vicar Apostolic there .

Life

Emil August Allgeyer was born in Rixheim, Diocese of Strasbourg , Alsace , and entered the Spiritan Missionary Order . Here he was ordained a priest on November 4, 1884 and was sent to the African mission.

On February 17, 1897, Allgeyer was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Zanguebar, later renamed Zanzibar, and Titular Bishop of Ticelia . In the Spiritaner Mission House Knechtsteden , the Alsatian was ordained bishop on April 25, 1897 by Auxiliary Bishop Antonius Fischer , who later became a cardinal. He was assisted by Adolf Fritzen , Allgeyer's home bishop of Strasbourg , and the Paderborn auxiliary bishop Augustinus Gockel , as co- consecrators . On May 9th, the new bishop visited his hometown Rixheim.

Emil Allgeyer was on friendly terms with Antonius Fischer. After the episcopal ordination, the Vicar Apostolic announced that his first newly founded mission station would be called “ Fisherman's Town ” after the consecrator , which he actually did. It was in the Rombo district, on Kilimanjaro . Together with Fischer and Fritzen, Emil Allgeyer consecrated Franz Xaver Vogt, Apostolic Vicar of Bagamoyo, as bishop on October 14, 1906 in Knechtsteden. This area was separated from Allgeyers Sprengel in 1906.

The Spiritans worked in East Africa since 1872. On November 13, 1883, the Apostolic Vicariate Zanguebar was established as a "diocese on probation". Under Bishop Allgeyer's pontificate it was then divided into several independent vicariates due to the rapidly growing number of Christians. Allgeyer administered his mission area carefully and diligently. He promoted the religious system. After 17 years in government, he resigned his office and returned to Europe. There he lived near Paris and died in 1924. In the meantime, the Apostolic Vicariate of Zanzibar has been incorporated into the Archdiocese of Nairobi, founded in 1953 .
