Bill Cardoso

William J. "Bill" Cardoso (born September 24, 1937 in Cambridge , Massachusetts , † February 26, 2006 in Kelseyville , California ) was an American journalist and representative of New Journalism . Cardoso is best known for coining the term gonzo journalism , the trademark of his friend Hunter S. Thompson .

life and work

Cardoso was of Portuguese descent. He studied journalism at Boston University . From 1967 he worked for the Boston Globe . In the 1960s and 1970s, Cardoso et al. a. for Crawdaddy! , Harper's Weekly , New Times , Ramparts and Rolling Stone . During this time he was a close friend of Hunter S. Thompson . Cardoso reported on the legendary boxing match, the Rumble in the Jungle , between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman . Some of his work appeared in 1984 in the anthology The Maltese Sangweech and Other Heroes .

Cardoso died of heart failure on February 26, 2006 in Kelseyville , California.
