history

The Diocese of Tanga was founded on April 18, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. established with the Apostolic Constitution Amplissima plerumque from cession of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Kilimanjaro as Apostolic Prefecture Tanga . On February 24, 1958, the Apostolic Prefecture Tanga was by Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Qui idcirco raised to the diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam as a suffragan .
