action

A man sneaks into a military-controlled area and steals the front door of an apartment.

In a flashback, the man is in said apartment together with his wife and their daughter. Due to a reactor accident in the nearby power station , the family has to leave the apartment. They are not allowed to take any clothes or other things with them and move to another city to live with relatives.

Over time, the daughter fell ill with radiation sickness and eventually died of its consequences. The door that the father stole from the old apartment serves as a stretcher on which the daughter is transported to her grave, just as the man's father was once transported to his burial.

background

The Door was shot entirely in Kiev and Pripyat and funded by the Irish Film Board . The film is based on the text "Monologue about a whole life, which is recorded on a door" from the book "Chernobyl. A Chronicle of the Future" by Svetlana Alexievich.
