The Archdiocese of Mwanza ( Latin : Archidioecesis Mvanzaensis ) is a metropolitan bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church based in Mwanza in Tanzania .
history
The forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Mwanza was the Apostolic Vicariate of South Victoria-Nyanza , founded on July 13, 1894 from the Apostolic Vicariate North -Victoria-Nyanza . The name of the Apostolic Vicariate changed to Victoria-Nyanza (1915) and finally to Mwanza (1929). On March 25, 1953, the Vicariate Apostolic Mwanza was by Pope Pius XII. Elevated to the diocese and on November 18, 1987 by John Paul II to the archbishopric.
Suffragan dioceses are Bukoba , Bunda , Geita , Kayanga , Musoma , Rulenge-Ngara and Shinyanga .
In 1998 the Archdiocese and the TEC founded the St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) and in 2005 the Weil-Bugando University College of Health Sciences (BUCHS). Precursor was the 1960 by the Order of the White Fathers built Nyegezi Social Training Center , in 1983 at the initiative of Bishop Joseph Blomjous renamed Nyegezi Social Training Institute (NCTS) . From 1975 the school with over 2500 pupils and students was under the patronage of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC) through Renatus Butibubage .
