Anthony Petro Mayalla

Anthony Petro Mayalla (born April 25, 1940 in Nera, Mwanza , Tanzania ; † August 19, 2009 in Mwanza , Tanzania) was a Tanzanian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mwanza .

Life

Anthony Mayalla studied at Loyola University Chicago , USA and was ordained a priest in Ibindo on December 20, 1970 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him fourth bishop of Musoma , a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Mwanza , in 1979 . The episcopal ordination donated him on April 22, 1979 the Archbishop of Dar es Salaam , Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa ; Co-consecrators were his predecessor John James Rudin MM and Renatus Lwamosa Butibubage , former bishop of Mwanza. In 1987 he was appointed fourth Archbishop of Mwanza.

Mayalla was the founder of the Weil Bugando Medical Center (WBMC) in Mwanza and the St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT). He was a member of the board of directors of the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA). From 1983 to 1989 he was chairman of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC).

Anthony Mayalla died of a heart attack while in office.
