The Bistum Sumbawanga ( lat. : Dioecesis Sumbavangensis ) is an in Tanzania preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Sumbawanga . It covers the southern part of the Rukwa region .

history

Pope Pius XII founded the Apostolic Vicariate Karema with the Apostolic Constitution Quo maiora on May 10, 1946 from cessions of territory of the Apostolic Vicariate Tanganika .

With the bull Quemadmodum ad Nos she was raised to the diocese on March 25, 1953. On October 24, 1969, it took on its current name. It lost part of its territory on October 23, 2000 in favor of the establishment of the Diocese of Mpanda . On December 21, 2018, the Sumbawanga diocese was subordinated to the Mbeya Archdiocese as a suffragan .
