Sumbawanga is a city in the region Rukwa in Tanzania .

Sumbawanga has 124,204 inhabitants (as of 2012). It is the largest city in the Rukwa region and it is number 17 in the list of the largest cities in Tanzania.

The city lies 1,840 meters above sea level on the Ufipa Plateau between Lake Tanganyika in the west and Lake Rukwasee in the east. The climate is warm, Cwb according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation of 934 millimeters per year falls mostly in the months November to April, from June to September it hardly rains. It is coolest in June, the warmest in October, the average temperature is 19.3 degrees Celsius.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Economy: While the surrounding country lives mainly from agriculture, there are also small commercial and industrial companies in Sumbawanga, which mainly deal with the processing of agricultural products.
  • Electrical energy: In October 2011, a power plant with an output of 1.25 MWegawatt went into operation. This meant that 5 megawatts were available to supply Sumbwanga and the Kalambo and Nkasi districts with electrical energy.
  • Water: In 2012, 60 percent of the population had access to clean and safe water, in 2017 73 percent already had access to public water. In 2019, a European Union project to improve urban water supply and sanitation in Sumbawanga was started.
  • Airport: In Sumbawanga there is a local airport with a 1600 meter runway.
  • Roads: The main road link is the T9 national road, which runs from Tunduma in Zambia in the south through Sumbawanga to Mpanda and further north. In Sumbawanga, the T20 national road branches off south to KIasesya in Zambia.

Others

In April 2019, German ophthalmologists were in Sumbawanga for the fourth time. Ten doctors examined 1,000 patients and performed 200 operations.
