The church of San Francesco a Ripa , actually San Francesco d'Assisi a Ripa Grande ( Latin: Sancti Francisci Assisiensis ad Ripam Maiorem ), is located in the Roman district of Trastevere , not far from the Aurelian Wall and only around 200 m west of the Tiber .
During his visit to Rome in 1219, St. Francis of Assisi lived here in a hospice . The stone that the saint used as a pillow and his crucifix are said to have remained in the cell. His successor on the board of directors of the Franciscan Order, Rodolfo Anguillara , whose tomb shows him in the habit of the order, gave the order to rebuild the church in 1231. Pietro Cavallini created its frescoes .
Around 1680, Cardinal Opizio Pallavicini replaced the basilica with the current building, which is characterized above all by its rich sculptural decoration. The monuments to the Cardinals Rospigliosi and Pallavicini in the transept chapel and the Paluzzi Albertoni chapel on the left side of the nave with the sculpture "Rapture of the Blessed Lodovica Albertoni " by Bernini are particularly worth seeing . The grave monument for Laura Frangipani by Andrea Bolgi is in the left side chapel .
On March 12, 1960, it became the titular church for a cardinal priest .
