history

The diocese Corner Brook and Labrador was on May 9, 1870 by Pope Pius IX. established from cession of territory of the diocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland as Apostolic Prefecture of West Newfoundland . The Apostolic Prefecture of West Newfoundland was founded on April 28, 1892 by Pope Leo XIII. raised to the apostolic vicariate . On February 18, 1904, the Vicariate Apostolic of West Newfoundland was elevated to a diocese by Pope Pius X and renamed the Diocese of Saint George’s . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Saint John's, Newfoundland as a suffragan . On May 31, 2007, the Diocese of Saint George's Labrador Territory , which belonged to the dissolved Diocese of Labrador City-Schefferville , was annexed. In addition, the diocese of Saint George's was renamed the Diocese of Corner Brook and Labrador .
