Giuseppe Lazzarotto
Giuseppe Lazzarotto (born May 24, 1942 in Carpané di San Nazario , Vicenza Province , Italy ) is an Italian clergyman, emeritus Roman Catholic archbishop and diplomat of the Holy See .
Life
Giuseppe Lazzarotto received on April 1 in 1967 by the Bishop of Padua , Girolamo Bartolomeo Bortignon OFM Cap , the sacrament of Holy Orders . He studied at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy in Rome and obtained a doctorate in canon law . In 1971 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See and worked in the nunciatures in Zambia, Belgium and Cuba and from 1982 to 1984 for the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem. In the State Secretariat of the Vatican he was responsible for relations with governments.
On 23 July 1994 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Titular Archbishop of Numana and the apostolic nuncio in Jordan and Iraq . He was ordained bishop by Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano on October 7th of the same year; Co- consecrators were the secretary of the Congregation for the Eastern Churches , Archbishop Miroslaw Marusyn , and the Bishop of Padua, Antonio Mattiazzo . On November 11, 2000, Giuseppe Lazzarotto became Apostolic Nuncio in Ireland . Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on December 22, 2007 as Apostolic Nuncio in Australia .
On August 18, 2012, Giuseppe Lazzarotto was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Cyprus and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem and Palestine . One of the main tasks for Lazzarotto, who resided as nuncio in Jaffa and as a delegate in Jerusalem, would be to negotiate a tax and financial agreement with the government of Israel. With the appointment of his successor Leopoldo Girelli as Apostolic Nuncio in Israel and Cyprus, he entered old-age retirement in September 2017. On October 4, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples .
Giuseppe Lazzarotto is Grand Officer (Commander with a star) of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2018 he was appointed by Edwin Frederick O'Brien , Cardinal Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem as the new Assessor of the Order based in the Vatican.
In addition to Italian, he also speaks English, French and Spanish.
